Story Contracting is proud to commit to the Young Person’s Guarantee and join employers across Scotland in creating the best opportunities we can for young people.
The Young Person’s Guarantee is a joint commitment to provide opportunities for all 16-24 year olds through jobs, apprenticeships, further and higher education, and training programmes.
Story kick-started our commitments with an industry ‘taster day’ which was held on site at Ravenscraig WCML Crossing earlier this month with a small group of students from high schools across North Lanarkshire.
During this session the students were able to find out what goes into constructing a brand-new bridge underneath a railway line, learn more about the rewarding careers available in the construction industry, and receive one-to-one career advice sessions from civil engineers and quantity surveyors.
Following this session, Story was delighted to invite the students to join the project team for a work placement to gain invaluable, hands-on experience which has been arranged in alignment with school timetables. Upon completion of their work placements, the students will take part in a CV and interview workshop to support them with future job applications. An overview of the Story graduate apprenticeship programme will also be given so that those interested in working with the company can learn more about their options.
David Hamilton, Project Manager, Story Contracting said: “It’s been great to support young people in the North Lanarkshire community whilst we are delivering such a key engineering project within the area. We can really highlight how important civil engineering is in shaping the world that we live in and site visits to live construction show off the work that can often go unseen.”
“We’ve been delighted to work with Developing the Young Workforce to offer industry taster days to a group of very enthusiastic young people who also put themselves forward to join us on work experience. With our annual intake of Graduate Apprenticeship roles opening later this year for applications, this is a brilliant opportunity for these students to kickstart their careers in construction.”
Anna Cairney, Programme Executive, Developing the Young Workforce added: “It’s great to have Story Contracting pledge to the Young Person Guarantee. They have already held taster sessions for pupils from North Lanarkshire High Schools, and moved onto their work placements, which will give an insight into careers available within the company. This enables the young people to see how their journey could unfold onto apprenticeship opportunities and more.”
“This is truly inspiring, and well done to Story, we’re looking forward to the next collaboration!”
Reece Blakely, who joined Story for a work experience placement added: “Over the past few weeks I have learned so much about how the project team do things on the live site at Ravenscraig. I am very happy and very grateful for this opportunity and hope to continue my development with Story.”
Story is looking forward to continuing to work alongside Developing the Young Workforce to deliver opportunities for young people across Scotland.
