Story set to deliver Salford Central station enhancements

On behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Story Contracting is set to deliver a series of enhancement works at Salford Central station.

Work started in January 2025 on a new customer ticket office and modernisation of the station building. A covered walkway will be added from the lift to platform 1, new customer information points installed, and more accessible toilets will also be delivered as part of the scheme.

The works are part of a £10m investment from TfGM and Network Rail to deliver accessibility and customer upgrades at Salford Central station.

The station improvements will deliver a better passenger experience and modernise Salford’s biggest railway station, supporting the growth of the city-region.

Martin Smith, Regional Director for Story Contracting, said: “Story Contracting is proud to continue our partnership with TfGM to deliver vital upgrades to the railway network and support the growth of communities across Greater Manchester.

“During the scheme we’ll be working with the local supply chain and community to ensure this project delivers more than station improvements, through work experience, employability initiatives, volunteering and environmental activities.”

So the work can be carried out safely and as quickly as possible, the station will be closed from 10 February 2025 – 21 April 2025, with additional closures on Sunday 27 April and Sunday 4 May. Construction works will take place from January until Autumn 2025.

Alongside the works at Salford Central, Network Rail will build a third platform at Salford Crescent station, reducing delays and improving train congestion through the busy Castlefield corridor. This work requires weekend closures between March and September 2025.

Simon Elliott, Head of Rail at TfGM, said: “As part of Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) ongoing commitment to enhancing the transport infrastructure across Greater Manchester, we welcome the significant improvement and investment planned with Network Rail’s work at Salford Crescent and TfGM’s at Salford Central.

“This investment in Salford will not only improve the passenger experience but also contribute to a more reliable and connected network for everyone. Together, these upgrades are a vital part of our wider ambition to improve our integrated and sustainable transport system for the future.”

Chris Coleman, Industry Programme Director at Network Rail, said: “The upgrade work at Salford Central is a great example of collaboration across the rail industry, getting the best for passengers and rail users. Jointly funded by Network Rail and TfGM, these much needed improvements will complement the work being done at Salford Central and future plans for Oxford Road and beyond, meaning we keep moving people and goods, safely and on time.”
