The team behind the Hessle Foreshore Strengthening works have been recognised for their outstanding community engagement and outreach programme during the delivery of the project.

The Story Contracting team have been shortlisted for the Community Engagement Award at the Ground Engineering Awards 2021, following the completion of the essential works to futureproof the railway line in and out of Hull.

The award nomination recognises the lasting benefits created in the local community by the team, which went beyond delivering the engineering aspects of the scheme.

Matt Kendall, Contracts Manager, said: “From day one of the project, the team had a clear understanding of the community’s needs and how they were to be met; engaging early with the local Parish Council, nearby community groups and residents.

“The project team actively sought and engaged with community concerns – particularly around the part closure of the popular Foreshore footpath – to arrive at solutions that best suited all parties, all whilst dealing with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Throughout the project the team gave their time to help local community projects, including replacing approx. 1,400m of fencing and gates for the local Riding for Disabled Charity, and delivered several biodiversity improvement initiatives, including planting 60 trees around the site.

The team will find out if they take the top spot at the Ground Engineering Awards on 23rd November 2021.
