Story Scotland launches dedicated Transportation Division to drive infrastructure growth

Story Scotland has announced a strategic restructuring to enhance its service delivery for clients, launching dedicated Transportation and Energy divisions to align with the increasing investment in Scotland’s infrastructure. This move will create value for clients and strengthen the company’s position as a leading civil engineering specialist in the region.

Supporting Scotland’s Construction Industry

John MacArthur, Managing Director of Story Scotland, emphasised the importance of the restructure in response to the growing opportunities within the transportation and energy sectors. “We see significant investment in these areas over the next decade, so it’s important that our business model is adapted in a way that allows us to respond to the challenges and opportunities this will bring. Having two distinct divisions brings ownership and accountability, enabling us to build stronger, more collaborative relationships with our clients.”

John will be supported in this transition by Craig Lafferty, Managing Director of the newly formed Transportation Division, and Alan Boyle, who leads the Energy Division that was launched earlier this year. “Craig and Alan are two very accomplished business leaders in their own right, and together we can create something special in Scotland – a great place to work, a trusted partner for our clients, and a contractor that genuinely cares about the communities we work in.”

Key Projects and Expansion Plans

With around 40 projects already lined up for the next 12 months under Network Rail’s CP7 framework, the Transportation Division is set for a busy and ambitious year. Key projects include the construction of a new train station in Barrhead, delivering light rail works on the Edinburgh Trams network, and an expansion into the ports and harbours sector via a General Construction Framework appointment for Peel Ports Ltd.

The Transportation division is forecast to generate sales of £70m-£80m in the coming year, with plans to scale up to £100m+ annually within five years. To support this growth, Story Scotland will expand its workforce and supply chain, investing in new skills and talent development.

Experienced Leadership Driving Growth

Bringing 27 years of construction industry experience, Craig Lafferty is set to lead the Transportation division towards its ambitious goals. Having worked on projects worth up to £450m across rail, nuclear, marine, highways, and petrochemical sectors, his extensive industry knowledge and strong client and supply chain relationships will be key drivers of success.

“The next 12 months promise to be incredibly exciting as we embark on delivering crucial infrastructure across a variety of engineering sectors,” Craig stated. “Our people are our greatest asset, and we’re committed to fostering a collaborative culture that supports both our workforce and supply chain partners. Investing in apprenticeships and early careers recruitment will be an important part of our strategy, ensuring a strong pipeline of talent for the future.”

Campbell Connor – Commercial Director

To further strengthen its leadership team, Story Scotland appointed Campbell Connor in 2024 as Commercial Director. With 35 years’ experience across civil engineering infrastructure, including rail, roads, aviation, water, and nuclear sectors, he will play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s commercial strategies and partnerships.

Commitment to Scotland’s Engineering Excellence

With a clear vision for growth and talent development, Story Scotland’s Transportation Division is set to play a key role in shaping Scotland’s infrastructure landscape. By embracing new opportunities and maintaining a strong focus on professional delivery that creates value for clients, the company is well-positioned to support the country’s evolving transportation needs while continuing to create an exciting and rewarding workplace culture.
