A major milestone has been reached to regenerate the southern entrance to Carlisle city centre.
Phase One of the Carlisle Southern Gateway project, which aims to regenerate the southern entrance to the city, creating a more attractive and vibrant area for residents, businesses, and visitors, has been completed by Story Contracting on behalf of the Cumberland Council.
Over the last four months, the Story team have completed the works on Victoria Viaduct, which consisted of excavating the existing footway, followed by the installation of new ducting, drainage, concrete slabs, bus shelter, street furniture, kerb lines, and finishing with sandstone and granite paving.
The completion of these works leads into Phases Two and Three of the project, where the team will be continuing works from the midpoint at English Street, down to the Botchergate junction.
In November 2024, additional safety barriers will be erected as Story continue to work through December. Works will pause however during the festive season to ensure minimal disruption and allow everyone to enjoy the holidays.
Looking ahead to 2025, a new phase will commence on the other side of English Street near Devonshire Street. Cumberland Council and Story will be coordinating closely with local businesses to minimise noise and disruptions, and their support has been invaluable in ensuring smooth progress.
Throughout the Southern Gateway Project, Story and Cumberland Council’s goal remains to enhance the city and ensure the infrastructure meets the needs of the community now and in the future. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2025.
