Last week saw the completion of two Highway Junction Improvement schemes in Barrow. The works at North Road and Michaelson Road were carried out by Story Contracting’s Construction division on behalf of Cumbria County Council.
In both locations, Story installed Permanent Traffic Signals to control the heavily congested infrastructure surrounding BAE Systems. The works included service diversions, ducting installation, footpath upgrades, traffic island installations, resurfacing and new traffic signals.
Both junctions experience high traffic flows, especially at North Road where vehicle counts are in excess of 20,000 per day. The junction also services Jubilee Bridge which provides the only link to the main land for Walney Island’s circa 11,000 residents.
Due to the nature of the works, careful management and supervision was required to ensure the works were completed as efficiently as possible, whilst causing minimal disruption to local residents. In order to do this the Story site team – backed by our valued subcontractors – worked a combination of days, nights and weekends to ensure the works were completed to the programme.
