The role will initially be located in Birmingham City Centre with planned relocation out of the city to Tamworth from July 2025.
As part of the senior management team support the MD in leading and managing the Engineering team to deliver safe, high quality, profitable projects and drive continuous improvement and development.
Provide leadership of the Engineering team, maintaining Story’s external reputation in delivering a capable, competent and profitable engineering function
- Anticipate and project future forecasts/budgets for the medium to long term for the function, sizing the organisation to meet demand and growth plans
- PnL responsibility for the function within the regional business and input into reviews on project health and action accordingly
- Lead for engineering function on tender deliverables, ensuring a timely and robust submission on prospective tenders and framework contracts
- Review, simplify and monitor business systems and accreditations
- Drive collaborative working to provide cost effective and innovative design solutions
- Provide design and engineering service to support safe and profitable projects from enquiry to completion
- Drive involvement in National engineering and safety forums
Implement a competent and scalable Engineering & Quality Management Framework to support the growth of the business.
- Set and manage a framework of multidisciplinary support for the rail, water, power and other emerging sectors in which Story operates
- Ensure robust Engineering management of frameworks from a technical and safety perspective
- Ensure a robust ‘authority to work’ procedure is in place and adhered to
- Ensure a clear and robust sign off process for design is in place and adhered to
Lead the internal Engineering team and provide additional external technical and legal support to ensure compliance with regulatory and any other standards. Raise Storys profile and contribute towards growth and successful delivery.
- Monitor developments, standard and legislation changes to drive proactive plans for the Technical function
- Develop and maintain regular business to business engagement with supply chain consultants to identify future work winning opportunities
- Lead Key Account Management for supply chain consultants to monitor and maintain performance in accordance with KPI measures
- Maintain and enhance accreditations
Provide technical support for the ongoing delivery of rail, civil engineering and multidisciplinary projects.
- Ensure all opportunities for value add/innovation are explored
- Undertake technical reviews to support the work winning effort, with a particular focus on major projects.
Provide strategic leadership to the Engineering function
- Coach and mentor individuals to maximise potential of themselves and the team
- Set robust performance and personal objectives that are aligned to the business plan delivery
- Identify talent and potential within the team, driving development and capacity
- Identify poor performance within the team and address
- Ensure reward and recognition activities are fair, equitable and aligned to business performance
- Take lead role in developing Early Careers programme through engagement with Sponsor Universities and professional bodies
- Identify and enable Continuous Improvement and Innovation opportunities to enhance process and performance
