Historic viaduct restoration works complete

Story Contracting has successfully completed the restoration of the Grade II listed Smardale Gill Viaduct, a significant landmark in the Cumbria region, on behalf of Northern Viaduct Trust.

Story completed urgent repairs to the 14-arch viaduct in 2023 to address water infiltration and prevent further damage to the structure, before returning to complete the second phase of repair works in July 2024, with the stonework now fully restored to ensure longevity of the historical structure.

The extensive restoration works included the repair or replacement of 130 stones, re-pointing of approximately 1,800m2 of existing stonework and the application of 20m3 of lime grouting to fill existing voids. Throughout the process Story worked to maintain public access to the former railway viaduct, which now forms part of a popular walking route.

The project involved a collaborative effort with Geo-Structural Ltd, our specialist rope access supply chain partner, whilst working closely with the Trust’s advisors from Ramboll (project management and engineering) and Thornton-Firkin (quantity surveying). A team from Flight Ecology ensured the protection of local wildlife throughout the project, with the viaduct being located within a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.

Neil Cleeveley, Chair of Northern Viaduct Trust, commented: “I think it’s fair to say that some of us were sceptical that the work could be completed by the end of 2024, but I am delighted to say that, thanks to all concerned, we just about made it! Our contractors worked in all weathers to get us there.

“Major projects like this can’t happen without the support of grant making trusts. We are fortunate to have engaged the support of the Benny Walker Charitable Trust and the Railway Heritage Trust; both were flexible and supportive funders who went above and beyond to help us achieve our objective of a fully restored viaduct.

“I also want to thank all our trustees, past and present, whose hard work and dedication made it possible.”
