We have recently implemented 5S in our stores building to ensure we provide our customers, internal and external, with a first-class service by meeting their needs first-time, every time. 5S is a Japanese concept which originated in the motor industry, most notably with Toyota. Nowadays, many organisations use 5S to maintain the standards and discipline to manage the organisation in a safe, efficient and productive way and forms the basis of a culture of continuous improvement.
The 5S’s are the steps to be followed in carrying out the process:
- Sort: Sort out and separate that which is needed and not needed in the area
- Straighten: Arrange items that are needed so that they are ready and easy to use and can be located in 30 seconds
- Shine: Clean the workplace and equipment on a regular basis in order to maintain standards and identify defects
- Standardise: Revisit the first three of the 5S on a frequent basis and confirm the condition of the workplace using standard procedures
- Sustain: Keep to the rules to maintain the standard and continue to improve every day
Benefits of 5S workplace organisation:
- Improved safety
- 5S becomes a fundamental business measure
- Forms a solid foundation upon which to build continuous improvement
- Staff at all levels gain a sense of ownership, involvement & responsibility
- Reduction in waste
- Improved performance in productivity, quality and morale leads to increased profitability
